Hobbies and Knowing Yourself
The other day me and my friend were having a conversation about knowing yourself and always making sure you have time for yourself. She's currently in a relationship and was telling me how it's hard for her to get time to herself at times because she has to always consider her free time for her significant other. This is one of the reasons why I choose to be single and I'm happy to be single because all my free time away from work is spent on me and what I want to do. I feel blessed to be able to have the freedom to spend my days off being lazy, catching up on sleep, reading books or exploring my city, etc. I was telling my friend how it's so important to be able to spend time away from your significant other to do things for yourself so you can stay in tune to you and the things that make you Y-O-U. I've had a boyfriend my whole life, or at least since I was old enough to have one. I would have a boyfriend for a few years, then breakup, be single for maybe a few months, and then jump into another relationship. I never knew what it was like to be single and be my own person. If you asked me a few years ago, what I like to do, I would've only been able to answer with a few things. This is because I never knew me. When you're in a relationship, it's easy to forget about the things you like and love to do because you sometimes cater to the other person, or have to compromise, etc. Now that I've been single for some time now and have been dedicating a lot of time to me, I can now tell you all the things I love to do, the things I don't like, etc. It's a liberating feeling. When I was a kid, I used to doodle and draw all the time. I even went to art classes cause my mom knew how much I loved to draw. I even majored in art when I first got into college. Unfortunately, during undergrad, being a confused young adult, I got very discouraged and thought I wasn't creative enough to be in that field so I switched my major to business. Not because I had this entrepreneurial-like mindset or because I had a passion for business, but because it was more like an option to me. And now, if you don't know I'm a nurse and I love it. But anyway, lately I've been craving to get back to my creative side and been wanting to start doodling so I stopped by an art store yesterday and picked up some goodies to work with.
I've kind of always been into quotes and typography (was a graphic design major initially) so I figured why not start a doodle book of some of my favorite quotes? I also learned about Zentangle while I was at the store and it's actually an art form that uses patterns and symbols that allows you to relax and focus on your inner self almost like a form of meditation or therapy. Sounds pretty neat right? I haven't started any of my own yet, but here's a picture to show you an example:
Pretty, right? Apparently it's not hard for beginners to get nice images like this either. I'm definitely going to be trying some of my own and I'll share with you when I'm done. Share me some of yours if you have any as well! I also want to learn how to draw mandalas as well. It seems similar to Zentangle, but the mandala is more of a symbol. If you don't know what it is just google it cause that's what I did.
I also finally went to a rock climbing gym yesterday! It was so much fun! Very hard, but so addicting and I can't wait to go back. As you probably already can tell, I love being in nature and hiking so I figured why not give rock climbing gyms a try since I'm stuck here in flat land Florida. So glad I went! Here's a shot of me top roping. I already feel so cool using rock climber lingo. =P
I know I need to get stronger and learn better technique, but I know it's a work in process. Anyone else go to rock climbing gyms? I'm just barely getting into this so any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Anyway, those are some of my current hobbies and I hope this post will inspire you to get curious to try new things or rekindle some old interests or hobbies of yours to bring back into your life. Because remember, you only got one shot, do not miss your chance to blow. Haha just kidding, that's what Eminem said. But really, life is short, spend every day doing the things you love and with the people you love.
Hope everyone is having a fabulous week!
